Pur Bahadur Gurung, widely known as Yukta, is a distinguished figure in the world of mountaineering, recognized for his exceptional achievements, leadership, and lifelong dedication to the Himalayas. He hails from the picturesque village of Dharche-4, Gorkha, Nepal, a region deeply rooted in mountain culture.
Yukta discovered his passion for the mountains at an early age. His professional journey began in 2009 with Trekking Guide Training and Basic Mountaineering Training. Since then, he has continually advanced his expertise through specialized programs, including High Mountain Rescue Training and the Aspirant Guide Course, reflecting his strong commitment to safety and excellence in high-altitude environments. He is also a proud member of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA).
His climbing résumé is extraordinary. Yukta has successfully summited Mount Everest nine times, climbed K2 twice, and reached the summits of several other 8,000-meter peaks, including Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, and Annapurna. One of his most remarkable achievements is setting a record by summiting four 8,000-meter peaks within just 12 days, demonstrating exceptional endurance and technical skill. He is also the first climber to successfully ascend Khumjungar Peak (6,757 m).
Yukta is on a mission to complete all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks, having already climbed 12. Beyond personal achievements, he has played a crucial role in numerous high-altitude rescue operations, including the recovery of Nelson Hillary’s body on Manaslu and the rescue of Captain Dependra Singh Khatri near the Hillary Step on Everest. His expertise has also led to collaborations with internationally renowned figures such as Jimmy Chin and Andres on National Geographic projects.
As a seasoned trekking and climbing guide, Yukta has worked with respected organizations including Churen Himal Trek, Kaitu Expedition, and Elite Expedition. His contributions extend beyond guiding; he is actively involved in teaching, project management, and community development, particularly through his work with the Mission Community Help Foundation.
Fluent in Nepali, Hindi, English, French, and Chinese, Yukta effortlessly connects with climbers from diverse cultural backgrounds. His Buddhist upbringing has instilled in him a deep respect for nature, shaping his philosophy of sustainable and responsible mountaineering. Outside of high-altitude climbing, his interests include rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, and photography.
